In part two of a series of conversations discussing the state and future of social media with Chris Beck, founder of 26dottwo (@26dottwo), we review the viability of Facebook as an advertising platform. The discussion brings up elements introduced in my recent post introducing the concept of The Last Mile and how everything begins with the First Mile. We also review the ever-thinning attention span (Media A.D.D.) and ideas introduced in Part Two of the Hybrid Theory Manifesto.
This series was filmed at the new video studio at KickLabs SF where I spend time as an entrepreneur in residence.

I agree that the ad sidebar will never become popular as an ad medium. I feel like the game needs to change into the hands of the consumer. Facebook and Google ads try to guess what I like by snooping into my searches, what pages I visit, or city I live in. I want to tell Facebook and Google, enough! I will tell you everything that I like, everything that fits me well, my favorite salsa.. everything. Because I know as soon as I do this, my ad experience will improve tenfold. I think that if this idea catches on, then I can be recommended products in my stream based on products I like and what my friends are liking. The whole world of possibilities opens for third-party ads and bringing the whole system of more relevant ads to the google ad platform. I wrote about this idea in my consumer manifesto on my blog(The Wildfire Companion).
Great video Brian! I agree A.D.D is widely spread on FB.. Ads are focusing so much on selling selling!` I agree people must be present. Telling story. Making it fun but compelling…
I think facebook uses what they have in their knowledge bank about us.. but do we seriously say the truth to make ads appealing to us? that is quesiton we need to ask ourselves.. Do we lie on FB or not.. Do we want to get ads that sell us or we are there to impress competitors..
We ought to be real, authentic! Then it is win win!

Great to see you on video Brian. You are a natural…
Ian, thank you. Have always been a bit reluctant to do video, but we'll see!
I don't have time to read all of the blogs I'd like to (you, Chris, Scott, Tom, etc.), but it's fairly easy to hit play and listen as I continue to work, so thank you. Please keep it up.
