Everything You Never Knew About Facebook

Shot at SXSW

While I’m currently in the midst of writing my next book, I stumbled across some very interesting and useful statistics that offer a glimpse into Facebook behavior and activity as well as the state of the Facebook platform. I believe that they reinforce many of our hunches and assumptions and also introduce facts that may alter the ingredients of your next Social Media initiative.

General:

Facebook has more than 250 million users

120 million users log on to Facebook at least once each day

People 35 years old and older represent the fastest growing demographic

Engagement:

The average social graph equates to 120 friends

More than 5 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide)

30 million users update their statuses at least once each day

8 million users “fan” Fan Pages each day

Applications:

1 billion photos are uploaded to the social network each month

10 million videos are uploaded to Facebook each month

1 billion social objects (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) shared each week

2.5 million events are created each month

45 million active user groups exist on Facebook

International:

About 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States

Platform:

More than one million developers from more than 180 countries are active

Every month, more than 70% of users engage with applications developed for the Facebook platform

There are more than 350,000 active applications currently available on the Facebook Platform

Over 200 applications maintain an active monthly user base of more than one million

15,000, and counting, websites, devices and applications have implemented Facebook Connect since its launch in December 2008

Mobile:

30 million users currently access Facebook through their mobile devices

People that use Facebook on their mobile devices are almost 50% more active on the social network than non-mobile users

    Thanks Brian!

If my math is correct, Facebook is facilitating 250 million people share an average of four items each week with 120 friends. Truly amazing!

Thanks Brian, interesting info. I knew fb did well outside US but 70% is impressive. Any data on users that interact with facebook through twitter? For example, of the 30 million users update their statuses at least once each day or those uploading photos, how many of these are being done through twitter clients?

Is Facebook breaking US eavesdropping laws with their snooping in “private” messages? One of many examples of the downsides of a proprietary, US-based, privately-owned, for-profit replica of the open internet:

As with training wheels, folks eventually gain confidence and leave these closed, proprietary “crippled internets” behind.

Mr. Solis – This is every bit as mindboggling as those Sprint ads that provide interesting stats. Facebook users on mobile devices topping 30 million caught me by surprise and 350,000 applications? Man, just thing when mobile becomes standard. We'll triple the 5 billion-minutes-a-day mark in a very short time. And, the 70% of users outside the US will continue to make this small world much smaller. Cool, and a little bit more interesting for those of us using new media in our businesses.

  6. Brian- this is excellent information. I think more talks should focus on stats like these and what they mean for us in the same industry in decision making.

  7. This is all interesting data. I was aware of the 35 and older demographic being a growing one, because it seems every day now, I find out that another older member of my family is on facebook, and it's just mind boggling. For the life of me, I don't know what it is about facebook, but it has that ability to bring people together in ways that the universe hasn't seen in the past.
